How the math works
Pay is hours times rate. The only choices are how many hours you count and how you split the year.
Yearly pay = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per yearAt 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours a year. $25 × 2,080 = $52,000.
Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)$52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.
- Monthly is yearly ÷ 12A month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks, not 4. That is why $1,000 a week is $4,333.33 a month, not $4,000.
- Biweekly is yearly ÷ 26Paid every other week gives 26 paychecks. Semi-monthly (the 15th and the last day, for example) gives 24, so each check is a little bigger.
- Daily is weekly ÷ daysA day's pay is your weekly pay split over the days you work, so 40 hours over 5 days is 8 hours a day.

Questions people ask
- How many working hours are in a year?
- A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. If you take two unpaid weeks off, it is 40 × 50 = 2,000 hours.
- Why isn't my monthly pay four times my weekly pay?
- A year has 52 weeks but only 12 months, so an average month holds 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks. Monthly pay is yearly pay divided by 12.
- What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
- Biweekly means every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, 24 paychecks a year. The yearly total is the same; semi-monthly checks are larger because there are fewer of them.
- Does this include taxes?
- No. Every figure is gross pay, before federal, state and local taxes, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions or insurance. Your take-home pay will be lower.
- Should I count paid vacation and holidays?
- Yes. If you are paid for those weeks, keep 52 weeks per year. Only subtract weeks you take off without pay.
