How a raise is figured

Two formulas cover both directions.

New pay = old pay × (1 + raise % ÷ 100)$50,000 × 1.03 = $51,500. The raise adds $1,500 a year, $125 a month.

Raise % = (new pay − old pay) ÷ old pay × 100($21.50 − $20.00) ÷ $20.00 × 100 = 7.5%.

  1. Hourly to yearlyA raise per hour is worth that amount times your hours in a year. $1 more an hour at 2,080 hours is $2,080 a year.
  2. Yearly to monthlyDivide the yearly raise by 12 for a monthly paycheck, or by 26 if you are paid every two weeks.
  3. Percent works both waysA 3% raise is 3% whether you count it per hour or per year, as long as your hours stay the same.
